OGLED is the branch of the Oil and Gas Directorate of the DTI that administers the licensing of acreage onshore and offshore UK, for hydrocarbon exploration and development. OGLED works within the regulatory regime that has been put in place to ensure that the exploitation of the UK's hydrocarbon reserves is conducted ensuring the best interest of the nation, and with due regard to the environment. The responsibility for environmental and decommissioning issues is no longer with OGLED - this has been transferred to the Environmental and Decommissioning branch. OGLED has a complement of 26 specialist staff consisting of reservoir engineers, geologists, geophysicists, petrophysicists and facilities engineers, and 36 administrative support staff. The specialist staff have two programmes that provide the consultancy support needed to carry out their regulatory function - the SHARP programme for IOR related studies, and the Offshore Geology programme for studies on prospectivity of areas for licensing. SHARP funding has a component for generic IOR research. This is used for sponsoring JIPs. The advisory panel, ACHARR, consisting of senior personnel from the industry has been set up to provide guidance on policy and to identify areas for support with JIP funding. The call for proposals goes out once a year, around January, to be reviewed by ACHARR around April. Usually 40% to 50% of the proposals are recommended for funding. The specifications for the next call will be posted on the SHARP website (www.dti-sharp.co.uk). Details may also be obtained from Tissa Jayasekera, Manager SHARP (Tissa.Jayasekera@dti.gsi.gov.uk). OGLED arranges the DTI IOR Dissemination Seminar, once a year, around June. This is arranged to report on the latest work done in the JIPs that are co-sponsored through SHARP. In 2002 we intend to widen the scope of this seminar by inviting presentations from other programmes and from industry. The seminar will be held on Tuesday 25 June 2002 at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre. Programme details will be posted on the SHARP website. |
