A new project on "Uncertainty and Upscaling" is starting at Heriot-Watt University in March 2002, under the direction of Professor Mike Christie and Dr Gillian Pickup. This project aims to develop practical solutions to problems in uncertainty and upscaling, and will build on the expertise developed in recent years at Heriot-Watt University in these areas. The two topics form separate modules, and can be sponsored individually or jointly.

The uncertainty module will develop methods to realistically quantify uncertainty in reservoir performance forecasting. This will include generation of multiple models constrained by geological data that match reservoir history, methods for producing realistic estimates of uncertainty in future production, and methods for quantification of the value of data.

The upscaling module will study a range of upscaling techniques, quantifying errors and developing practical procedures. We also plan to investigate scalable and refineable methods and alternative approaches to upscaling, such as streamline methods and multi-level simulation.
