The Department is committed to the development of training and research programmes which are relevant to the needs of the international petroleum industry. Ever since it was founded in 1975, the Department has utilised the expertise of its staff in conducting research. These research projects address real problems faced by companies involved in the development of oil and gas resources in the North Sea and in other oil producing provinces, throughout the world. With significant industrial support, this activity has flourished, and is now one of the largest research programmes in the University, with an annual income in the order of £5.5 million.

In February 1995 Heriot-Watt University received one of the inaugural Queen's Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education in recognition of the outstanding achievements and excellence of the Department of Petroleum Engineering. 1996 saw the department being awarded the top rating of Five Stars in the Research Assessment Exercise.

The Department has modern, well equipped laboratories covering many aspects of Petroleum Engineering, including Formation Damage, Petrophysics, Drilling and Production (Pilot plant scale), Micromodel Facilities, Production Chemistry, PVT (fluid properties and phase behaviour), Reservoir Conditions Core Flooding, Reservoir Geoscience and Rock Mechanics.
