Champagne Launch of MTEM Limited
Prof. Anton Ziolkowski, Dr Bruce Hobbs and their team at the University of Edinburgh have been working on using multi-transient electromagnetic surveys to detect hydrocarbons since 1991. By 2001, the theories had been tested and the principles of acquiring and interpreting the surveys established. At this point the idea of spinning off a company to exploit the technology was formed. MTEM Ltd (http://www.mtem.com/) began in November 2004 and was officially launched on 21 January 2005 at a party held in the Playfair Library at the University of Edinburgh.

Congratulations from IOR Views to Leo Walker (CEO), Anton Ziolkowski and Bruce Hobbs (both Technical Directors) on the successful launch of MTEM Ltd.
Anton Ziolkowski Introducing the Guest Speakers
The official party to celebrate the launch was held on 27 January 2005 in the splendid surroundings of the historic Playfair Library of the University of Edinburgh with over 150 guests in attendance. The welcoming address was given by Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, Professor Timothy O’Shea, and Nigel Griffiths, MP, Minister for Small Business, Enterprise and Construction formally launched the company.

Principles of MTEM
MTEM works by reversing the voltage between two electrodes thereby imparting a transient to the earth, and monitoring the response to the impulse. This is repeated at different frequencies. The data are then interpreted to produce a resistivity cross-section. The presence of resistors is an indication of either salt, basalt, or hydrocarbons.
The use of MTEM in conjunction with conventional seismic techniques reduces the risk of drilling dry wells significantly.
For more information on the principles of multi-transient electromagnetic surveys and their interpretation see the MTEM Ltd website.
