Introduction

Issue 12, August 2006

Peter Haile is deputy director of DTI’s ERDU-LED with responsibility for exploration, promotion and knowledge.

Welcome to the August 2006 edition of issue of IOR Views.  This is the first issue of IOR Views since the retirement of Tissa Jayasekera. We wish him well and thank him very much for his past contribution to IOR Views. I have for the moment taken over from Tissa as the Project Manager for the OG-MRP.

Since the last edition in November 2005, DTI launched a 24th Licensing round which proved to be very successful and has also carried out an Energy Review which was published on 11 July 2006.  The Review looked at, amongst other things, the way forward with regards to Oil and Gas, making a number of recommendations, these being:

  • The DTI will lead a taskforce of licensees to report to the Energy Minister by the end of the year on whether a gas export route for the West Shetland area could be established and the means by which it could be delivered.
  • Engaging industry to report on how commercial practice can be further improved to cut delay and improve effective deals and to implement their ideas by the Spring of 2007
  • The DTI's Stewardship process will immediately focus on local exploration potential and on field reliability to deliver improved performance by June 2007.

I hope you find interesting reading in this issue. There are four items on CO2 EOR and associated carbon capture and storage (CCS), as well as articles on uncertainty quantification, in situ combustion, low salinity water flooding, EWTs and stratigraphic traps.  We do encourage readers to submit articles suitable for publication in future issues. If you have an idea for an article please contact the editor David Hughes (david.hughes@senergyltd.com).

I am sure everyone who attended DEVEX 2006 (17-18 May) will agree that it was a successful event. For the benefit of those who could not attend, there are reports (with links to the papers) on the presentations related to DTI-sponsored JIPs and presentations related to “Heavy Oil”.

Lastly I would like to thank David Hughes and the IOR Views team at Senergy for their untiring efforts in keeping in touch with the IOR community and the industry at large, and soliciting all these quality articles.
