Editorial

David Hughes
The SHARP IOR eNewsletter is edited on behalf of the DTI, oil and gas directorate by David Hughes (david.hughes@senergyltd.com), Principal Reservoir Engineer with Senergy Ltd in Aberdeen.

Thank you for viewing the fifth issue of the SHARP IOR eNewsletter.

The topics covered in the articles in this issue range from looking for more UKCS oil in stratigraphic traps to the merits of 4D seismic - covering CO2, post-waterfloood depressurisation, three-phase rel perms and huff and puff along the way.

We are grateful to John Brooks of Brockwood Petroleum Advisors for providing a valuable talking point article on the need to stimulate more exploration activity on the UKCS and to UKOOA for their views on the measures announced in the 2003 Budget.

Statistics Relating to Issue 4

During the nearly four month period since 11 February 2003 when Issue 4 went live on the website, the eNewsletter has received just under 68,000 hits - so we fell short of the stretch target of 100,000 that I aspired to in my last editorial! Nevertheless, in this time the eNewsletter has received 6700 visits from 2900 unique visitors. The average time spent by a visitor viewing the eNewsletter was around 18 minutes. Around 660 visitors viewed the site more than once.

The articles on CO2 injection and sequestration proved most popular. See table below for top ten most visited articles from Issue 4. Congratulations to the authors of these articles.

Feedback

Again no feedback in the form of emails to the editor was received in response to any of the articles in Issue 4. To encourage more active participation from readers, the principal articles in this issue all have a button at the end enabling the reader to provide instant feedback. This feedback will be checked by the editor and added to the end of each article within a day or so. This hopefully should encourage a dialogue between authors and readers and between different readers.

Please use this facility freely to provide your views, comments and any questions you might have.

Distribution

In the past the email notifying the contents of a new issue of the eNewsletter has been sent to selected representatives within the various companies and organisations with an interest in IOR with the hope that these reps will further distribute the email. One-or-two organisations set up a distribution email address as requested in my earlier editorials, and thanks to them. However, I have been hearing time and again that people an unaware of this eNewsletter so we have now set up a distribution list of email address to which people can add or remove their own email address as they wish. If you wish to receive future email notifications (three issues per year) or remove yourself from the list, please click here for more information.

By using this new approach to distribution we hope that we will be more able to establish contact with and remain in touch with the IOR community particularly in the UK but anyone from elsewhere is also welcome to subscribe.

Of course you do not need to have received an email to be able to view the SHARP IOR eNewsletter. The current and all previous issues are always available for viewing on the website.

Next Issue

The DTI is holding its annual Research Dissemination Seminar on 24 June 2003 in Aberdeen. For the provisional programme see the main SHARP website (http://www.dti-sharp.com) and click forthcoming events then programme.

I hope to see as many of you as possible there and we will have a report on the day's events in the next issue.

Also taking place prior to the next issue of this eNewsletter is the annual IEA Collaborative Project on EOR Workshop and Seminar which is being held this year in Regina, Saskatchewan in Canada on 7-10 September 2003. The itinerary includes a visit to the CO2 injection project in EnCana’s nearby Weyburn field. I am fortunate to be attending and hope to report on the proceedings is the next issue.

Contributed Articles

The DTI welcomes the submission of material for inclusion in the SHARP IOR eNewsletter. IOR is interpreted very widely and can include anything that leads to improved exploration, appraisal, development or recovery of oil and gas.

If you would like to submit an article or other contribution for inclusion in the next issue of the eNewsletter, please provide the text in a Word document. Please provide separately any graphic objects included in the Word document. If these originated from Excel or PowerPoint then please send these files also. Any other graphic objects should be sent as .jpg files or other high quality graphic format files. Submitting the graphic objects in separate files provides us with better originals for use in constructing the web pages. Ideally all the files relating to a single article should be zipped into a single file prior to submission.

Please keep contributions relatively short and make liberal use of hyperlinks to other material on your own website. As a guide the equivalent of around two pages of A4 of text, plus 2-4 graphic objects should be sufficient. Please also send an electronic passport-type photo of the author(s).

Contributions should be submitted at any time to iornewsletter@senergyltd.com. These will be reviewed and if appropriate published in the next issue. The copy deadline for the next issue is 31 August 2003.

Acknowledgements

Thanks firstly to all those who have provided the articles and other features for this issue. Thanks also to Tissa and the others at the DTI who have provided their contributions in a timely manner. Finally thanks are also due to Grant and Chris in the IT department at RML who slave away constructing the web pages from the material provided. Their next project is to redesign the eNewsletter home page which should be complete in the next month or so. Among other features this will provide a facility to keyword search the SHARP IOR eNewsletter archive.
