Tissa Jayasekera (tissa.jayasekera@dti.gsi.gov.uk) is Manager of the DTI’s LCU-LED SHARP programme.

A new three year SHARP programme was launched on 1 April 2003. The new programme combines previous SHARP with the Offshore Geology programme making one composite programme, but keeping the total value unchanged. The programme objectives have been somewhat re-focussed recognising the new challenges and opportunities emerging within the maturing UKCS. Basically the thrust is directed towards increasing exploration effort, maintaining a flexible licensing regime where the licences are in the hands of those best suited to develop the opportunities, and ensuring current developments maximise economic hydrocarbon recovery. New SHARP will continue to co-sponsor JIPs as before.

The next meeting of the Advisory Committee for Hydrocarbons Additional Recovery Research (ACHARR) will be held on 8 July 2003. All the project proposals received in response to the recent call will be reviewed at this meeting. ACHARR advises DTI LCU-LED on the funding policy with regard to these proposals.

The DTI IOR Dissemination Seminar is planned for Tuesday 24 June 2003. It will be held in the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre. The programme (http://www.dti-sharp.com and click under “Forthcoming Events”) will have presentations from the JIPs that DTI co-sponsors followed by presentations on new themes, given by invited speakers. The new themes this year are “CO2 EOR and Sequestration” and “Mining Oil Field Data for Better Reservoir Management”. Registration should be made through the website or directly with Mrs Catherine Bishop (catherine.bishop@ecltechnology.com). I hope most of you will be able to attend.
