The SHARP IOR eNewsletter is edited on behalf of the DTI Licensing and Consents Unit by David Hughes (david.hughes@senergyltd.com), Principal Reservoir Engineer with Senergy Ltd in Aberdeen .

Welcome to Issue 7 of the SHARP IOR eNewsletter, the start of our third year.

New in This Issue

Thank you to everyone who has submitted items for this issue; I appreciate the time and effort that you have put in to further the cause and understanding of IOR. Again we have an eclectic mix of articles covering CO2 capture, storage and EOR, geomodel construction, NMR wettability measurements, network modelling of porosimetry experiments, air injection, enhanced gas recovery, leaky reservoirs, lithology prediction and improved productivity from microwave heating. The "Talking Point" in this issue is on seabed water injection systems. Could this technology revolutionise the development of small accumulations? What do you think? We also have reports on three recent conferences. Please provide your comments on any of the articles using the feedback box at the end of each article.

There were also two events relevant to EOR held during November and December 2003 where we do not have full reports. A two day workshop on Reservoir Storage of CO2 was organised by the mathematics and physics departments at the University of Bergen in Norway . The full agenda and many downloadable presentations can be found at http://www.mi.uib.no/CO2 . Also, ahead of CWC Associates Strategic Enhanced Oil Recovery: Maximising Profits through Effective Partnerships conference there was an interactive workshop on Making EOR a Reality . A distillation of the day's proceedings can be found at http://www.business-fundamentals.com/EORWorkshopResults.html .

DTI Topics

As Tissa has noted under LCU-LED - Call For JIP Proposals and News of Restructured IOR Dissemination Seminar , it is again the time of year when the DTI with the advice of ACHARR is looking for proposals for new Joint Industry Projects on innovative techniques applicable in hydrocarbon finding and extraction. Proposals should be submitted by 26 March 2004 .

Progress on current JIPs is reported annually at the DTI's IOR research dissemination seminar. For 2004 this seminar is being reorganised to include a much greater participation from industry and been given a new name: DTI Seminar on Maximising Hydrocarbon Recovery from the UKCS 2004. The event is at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on 22 and 23 June 2004 so please make a note of this in your diary.

Many of the more viscous (heavy) oil reservoirs discovered on the UKCS are as yet undeveloped. To disseminate work sponsored by the DTI in this area and to encourage industry debate on the way forward, the following event has been organised: DTI UKCS Heavy Oil Recovery Seminar 2004 for 29 April 2004 at the Hilton Treetops Hotel in Aberdeen . Speakers are from DTI, ChevronTexaco, Reservoir Management, Genesis, and MW Kellogg with a welcome by Simon Toole, Director, DTI Licensing and Consents Unit. For more details and to register online see http://events.senergyltd.com . As an introduction to the seminar an optional Master Class on Heavy Oil Recovery in the context of the UKCS, given by Nigel Brealey of Senergy Ltd, is being held on the afternoon of 28 April 2004 at the same venue.

As mentioned by Tissa we are looking for a new name for this web based publication to avoid confusion with email based newsletters. The name should not include "Newsletter" or "News" but should reflect our aspirations of being a location on the www where those with an interest in IOR can visit for information and to exchange views and ideas. If you have any suggestions please send them to either me ( david.hughes@senergyltd.com ) or Tissa ( tissa.jayasekera@dti.gsi.gov.uk ).

Statistics Relating to Issue 6

As you can see if you click on "click here to read feedback on this article" at the end of each article, we have received feedback on a number of the articles in Issue 6. I am surprised that there wasn't more response to the "Talking Point" in Issue 6 (Squaring the Circle: CO2 Sequestration and EOR). Your views are still welcome.

During the just over three month period from 27 October 2003 - 8 February 2004 , the eNewsletter has received nearly 85,000 hits, a significant increase over the previous issue (70,000 hits over a nearly four-month period). There were 11,000 visits from 3900 unique visitors. Of course Issue 6 and all the previous issues are available for viewing on the website and these statistics cover all issues.

The table below shows the statistics relating to the top ten technical articles from Issue 6. All items received over 130 visits. Features such as "Introduction" and "People and Projects" received up to 380 visits. PSFB items received up to 280 visits.

There was speculation last time that Malcolm Greaves' new article (Issue 6) would top the "visits" but he has been pipped at the post by the two Magnus articles. However, his original article (Issue 2) remains highly popular with 220 visits over the last three months and an average viewing time of 6:11 , longer than any other article!

No. Title Visits Av. Time viewed (min:sec)
1 Magnus Miscible WAG EOR Project 255 3:47
2 Converting Magnus EOR to CO2: An Unconventional Route to a UK CO2 Capture and Storage Demonstration Project? 257 3:46
3 THAI (Toe-To-Heel Air Injection) About To Break New Ground in Alberta 249 3:56
4 Visit to CO2 EOR Project in Weyburn Oilfield, Saskatchewan, Canada 211 3:45

6 Quantitative Investigation of Decrease in Gas Well Productivity Due to the Presence of a Condensate Bank Around the Wellbore 192 2:54
7 Enhanced Gas Recovery Potential from CO2 Injection into Depleted Dry Gas Reservoirs 163 3:18
8 The Use of Residual Oil as Nutrient for Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery - JIP Proposal 166 3:12
9 The Unfulfilled Promise of EOR, Dr S M Farouq Ali, 30 September 2003 , SPE London Section 152 4:15

Distribution of Notification eMail

When a new issue of the SHARP IOR eNewsletter is available an email to this effect is sent to everyone on a manually compiled distribution list. If you are not registered and wish to receive future email notifications (three issues per year) or to remove yourself from the list, please email the editor directly with your request ( david.hughes@senergyltd.com ). This replaces the previous automatic system which, because of the number of filters designed to prevent unwanted email, was not sufficiently reliable.

Of course you do not need to have received an email to be able to view the SHARP IOR eNewsletter. The current and all previous issues are always available for viewing on the website.

Contributed Articles

The DTI welcomes the submission of material for inclusion in the SHARP IOR eNewsletter. IOR is interpreted very widely and can include any initiative that leads to improved exploration, appraisal, development or recovery of oil and gas. There are no charges for including your article; equally we cannot pay you to produce the article.

Please keep contributions relatively short and make liberal use of hyperlinks to other material on your own website. As a guide, the equivalent of around two A4 pages of text plus 2-4 graphic objects should be sufficient. Please also send an electronic passport-type photo of the author(s).

Please provide the text in a Word document. Any separate graphic objects should be sent as .jpg files or other high quality graphic format files. Ideally all the files relating to a single article should be zipped into a single file prior to submission. Contributions should be submitted at any time to david.hughes@senergyltd.com . These will be reviewed and if appropriate published in the next issue. The copy deadline for the next issue is 26 April 2004.
