This Natural Environment Research Council Thematic Programme aimed at understanding the micro-to macro behaviour of rock-fluid systems held its end of programme scientific meeting at the Geological Society in London during 4 and 5 November 2003 . The highly successful two-day meeting brought together scientists from the Programme and representatives from the various industrial sectors that are interested in rock-fluid systems. The results of most of the projects funded by the Programme were presented and discussed at the meeting, one of the highlights of which was the keynote presentation by Professor Brian Berkowitz of the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel on some of the problems associated with up-scaling in rock fluid systems. Summaries of most of the projects are provided below. It is intended that a Special Publication of the Geological Society is published to make the results of the Programme available to a wider audience. This should be published in the early part of 2005. In the meantime much of the material presented at the meeting is being placed on the Micro-to-Macro Programme web site (http://www.bgs.ac.uk/micromacro/home.html) which is maintained on behalf of the project by the British Geological Survey. For further information on the Programme please contact Dr Richard Shaw (rps@bgs.ac.uk), Scientific Co-ordinator, Micro-to-Macro, British Geological Survey, Keyworth, Nottingham, NG12 5GG, UK, +44 (0) 115 9363545 |
