The first two days were assigned to the workshop, at which papers were presented in the following task areas:

  1. Studies of Fluids and Interfaces in Porous Media
  2. Fundamental Research on Surfactants and Polymer
  3. Development of Gas Flooding Techniques
  4. Thermal recovery
  5. Dynamic Reservoir Characterisation
  6. Emerging Technologies

This workshop was dedicated to the memory of the late Bill Brigham who passed away earlier this year. Bill has graced this event, as a member of the USA delegation, for very many years. He shall be greatly missed, as the contribution he has made over the years has been immense, through his presentations, as well as the lively discussions he initiated in the most affable way.

The third day was assigned to the Symposium. The topic this year was "Enhanced Recovery from Chalk or Carbonate Reservoirs". There was good industry participation here with lots of interesting papers.

The keynote address at the Symposium was given by Rolf Wiborg, Principal Engineer at Norwegian Petroleum Directorate. It was Rolf's view that the operating companies should keep the oil price in the range $20-30 per barrel when running project economics. He felt that there will be pressure from middle eastern producers to keep the price below $35/bbl to stifle competition from alternate technologies such as Syncrude, cleaner coal etc.
